SIBU:
Taekwondo bodies that are registered with state’s Sports Commissioner
(SC) and the Registrar of Societies (ROS) will be allowed to teach the
martial arts in schools nationwide.
Ministry of Education deputy director of Co-Curriculum and Arts Division, Mohd Annuar Abdul Hamid said taekwondo bodies must also register their instructors with the SC and the ROS.
“So long as the taekwondo body can fulfill these criteria, then there is no reason why they should be stopped from teaching taekwondo in schools,” he said during the Sarawak Taekwondo Federation (STF) annual dinner cum awards presentation ceremony held on Thursday night.
Among those present were Malaysia Taekwondo Association (MTA) secretary-general Eddie Tuan, chairman of MTA’s technical administrative board, Master Lee Byung Hee of World Taekwondo headquarters, South Korea and association chairman, Dr Henry Toh Yew King and principal of SMK Sacred Heart, Stephen Tan.
“We not siding with any party and we merely wanted to work for the interests and the betterment of students. The education agenda for children is more important and that is why we need to protect them,” Annuar said.
“Children can become aggressive gradually and we need to teach them the values in life so that they will develop into a better person when they grow up,” he added.
According to him, there were about 5.4 million students in the country including 2,000 secondary and 8,000 primary schools.
He said “We view taekwondo as an educational instrument and through taekwondo, or sports like wushu, silamban and silat, all these come with an added element of responsibility to nurture students into a better person.”
“It’s the spirit that is instilled in you and the philosophy behind the teaching, the breathing technique and for not provoking a fight that will prepare you to live in peace and harmony. That is the philosophy about taekwondo,” he enthused.
Meanwhile, Eddie earlier had assured Annuar that MTA would continue to teach taekwondo in schools to ensure that the students excelled in their chosen sports.
On another matter, he disclosed that Sarawak was chosen to host next year East Malaysia zone inter-school taekwondo championship.
