Four Gold For Malaysia At Taekwondo Championships In Guangzhou, China
SIBU, Aug 15 (Bernama) -- Malaysia chopped and kicked the competition out to bag four gold, two silver and three bronze medals at the three-day, Second Asia Zone Taekwondo Culture Open Championships in Guangzhou, China, beginning Aug 10.
The event is sanctioned by the world body, World Taekwondo Federation.
Malaysia Taekwondo Association (MTA) vice-president/grandmaster Dr Henry Y. K. Toh said some 1,500 fighters from more than 10 Asian countries, including powerhouse South Korea, took part in the championships.
He said Malaysia sent 17 taekwondo exponents to the event. Of the number, 10 participated in the 'poomsae' (pattern) division while the rest engaged in 'kyorugi' (free sparring).
He was speaking to reporters here today, after receiving a courtesy call from two Sarawakians who won a gold each for the national team.
The two are Wong Tiong Yung and Lucas Chieng Tiew Lik. Another participant, Winnie Lau lee Ling, snatched a bronze in the women's 48kg 'kyorugi' division.
On the results, Dr Toh said it was a "very important victory" for the MTA in its effort to regain its position as the national controlling body for the martial sport.
"The Sport Commission has recognised us as a national sport body. We hope the Olympic Council of Malaysia will reinstate us as member," added the grandmaster who is also MTA-affiliate Sarawak Taekwondo Federation chief technical director.
