Eight Penang Taekwondo Exponents To Represent Malaysia In Asian Zone Championships

GEORGE TOWN, Aug 3 (Bernama) -- Eight Penang United Taekwondo Society exponents will be representing the country to participate in the second edition of the Asian Zone Taekwondo Culture open Championships 2013 from Aug 9 to 12 in Guangzhou, China.

Malaysia Taekwondo Association (MTA) national technical director, Peter Kang said the championship will serve as a platform for the exponents to gain international exposure.

"This is the opportunity for them to gain experience from the international participants and hopefully after the championship, they can represent the state in Malaysia Games (Sukma) or even represent the country in the world stage," he told reporters here Saturday.

He said this was the first outing for Malaysia in this championship and among other countries which will participate in this edition are Singapore, Thailand and South Korea.

"All our exponents aged between 13 to 38-year-old and will participate in Kyorugi sparring category, poomsae individual pattern category and poomsae group category," he said, adding that more than 1,500 taekwondo exponents are expected to participate in the championship.

One of the Taekwondo coaches in the state, S. Sathiya Kumar, 38, said he will be competing in the above 18-year-old poomsae individual pattern.

"I hope to perform well during the championship and win some medals for the country," he said.

Earlier, State Youth and Sports Department director Zakaria Kasa had handed over the the Jalur Gemilang (national flag) to the group.

Zakaria said this will be a good platform for the state to identify taekwondo exponents to represent the state.

"I hope that all Malaysian exponents will perform their best during the championship in order for them to be selected into the state team," he said.
