Two students to represent country at taekwondo competition in China

SIBU: Two taekwondo exponents from here will represent Malaysia at the Second Asian Zone Taekwondo Culture Open Championship in Guangzhou, China, on Aug 9-12.
They are Wong Tiong Yung, 17, and Lucas Chieng Tiew Lik, 16. Both are students of Sacred Heart Secondary School.
“Both of them are outstanding state representatives. They are representing the country for the first time in the Poomsae category,” Sarawak Taekwondo Federation (STF) vice-president Kiew Shysh Yong said at a flag handing-over ceremony here yesterday.
Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh handed over the flag to team manager cum coach Michael Wong in the presence of the two exponents and an international referee Pang Ming Siing.
Wong urged the two exponents to do the country proud by trying their best and also make use of the opportunity to gain more experience and skills.
He also said this would be a good platform for the state exponents to excel themselves in the world stage.
Meanwhile, the coach said he was confident the two would shine in the competition.
“They are the gold medalists in the First Penang Taekwondo Poomsae Championship held in March,” Michael said.
Among other countries that will take part in the championship are Singapore, Thailand and South Korea.
