TAEKWONDO: Eight of the best
GEORGE TOWN: EIGHT taekwondo exponents from Penang will carry the Jalur Gemilang to the 2nd Asian Zone Cultural Championships starting in Guangzhou, China tomorrow.
The event is hosted by the Guangdong District Taekwondo Association and the Guangdong Competitive Sports Training Centre.
State Youth and Sports department director Zakaria Kasa said the exponents, comprising three men and five women, were from the Penang United Taekwondo Society (MTA-WTF) and they were selected during last month's state Closed Junior Taekwondo Championship.
The eight will participate in kyorugi (sparring), individual and team poomsae (pattern) in the junior (13-16 age-group) category and the senior (above 17 years) category.
Former two-time national champion Sathiya Kumar Satinathan, a sixth dan taekwondo exponent, will lead the team.
He will participate in the senior poomsae (individual pattern) category while Yuganeswaraan Krishnan (above 17) and Mathuraiveran Ravindran (13-16) make up the men's team.
The women's team comprise Koay Yin Yin, Chuah Sue Yi, Chuah Xin Hui and Kung Boon Pei (all above age 17), and Tai Li Ling (13-16).
Accompanying them are Neoh Eng Huat, who is both coach and team manager, Malaysian Taekwondo Association grandmaster Peter Kang and Mas Muna Radhi.
Neoh, who was also the state's United Taekwondo Society (MTA-WTF) chairman, said it was the first time the national body had selected Penang to send a team to the four-day Asian-level championships where some 1,500 martial arts exponents from more than 10 countries will be competing.
"Since we are participating for the first time, we are not sure of the competition level there. As such, we have not set a target.
"Participation at the championship is mostly out of goodwill, but it will be a good exposure for our athletes in preparation for the 2014 Perlis Malaysia Games and also for other national level championships.
"The Guangzhou Competitive Sports Training Centre has produced many world champions, so we intend to tap its training techniques and facilities," he said after receiving the national flag from Zakaria at the Youth and Sports Complex in Batu Uban near here recently.
Neoh said while in Guangzhou, they will also be scouting for coaches for the state and national teams and at the same time open up avenues for a twining programme so that both Penang and Guangdong can have regular exchange programmes.

THE Penang United Taekwondo Society (PUTS) are keen on forging a long-term working partnership with the Guangdong Province Taekwondo Association in Guangzhou, China.
As a first step, the Malaysian Taekwondo Association and World Taekwondo Federation affiliated PUTS will send a team of eight exponents to compete in the 2nd Asian Zone Taekwondo Cultural Open Championships in Guangzhou form Aug 9-12.
The eight – Mathuraiveran Ravindran, Yuganeswaran Krishnan, Sathiya Kumar, Tai Li Ling, Koay Yin Yin, Chuah Sue Yi, Chuah Xin Hui and Kung Boon Pei – were selected based on their excellent performances at the recent Penang Closed Taekwondo Championships in July.
They are being groomed to lead Penang’s challenge in next year’s Malaysia Games (Sukma) taekwondo competition.
“The Guangzhou province in China are well-known in the taekwondo fraternity for producing several Olympic and world champions. It makes sense for us to form a working co-operation to learn from them,” said PUTS president Neoh Eng Huat.
More than 1500 exponents from 10 countries, including South Korea, Singapore and Thailand, are expected to compete in the Asian Zone meet.
“In future, we intend to send Penang exponents to train in Guangzhou and bring over coaches from China to help improve our standard.”
