SIBU: Second Finance Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh reminds athletes
that the true spirit of participation in competitions is to foster
unity and togetherness.
“In sports, it’s not so much about winning
or losing. Rather, it’s your full spirit and the spirit of
sportsmanship that is what truly matters,” he added.
Wong was
speaking at the opening of the inaugural East Malaysia Zone Self Defence
Taekwondo Championship 2013 held at SMK Sacred Heart yesterday
afternoon.
More than 200 exponents from 32 teams, including a team
each from Kota Kinabalu and Labuan, took part in the championship. The
eight local participating divisions included Miri, Tatau, Bintulu, Sibu,
Sarikei Team A and B, Kanowit and Mukah.
Among those attending
the event were Malaysia Taekwondo Association (MTA) Secretary General Eddie Tuan
and Sarawak Taekwondo Federation (STF) Chairman Dr Henry Toh and Sibu
Resident Sim Kok Kee.
The two-day championship, organised by MTA and hosted by STF was aimed at promoting the art of self defence among the students.
He
recalled Dr Toh spent most part of his life promoting taekwondo and he
must know very well that taekwondo was good for the young people.
“You have chosen taekwondo as one of your extracurricular activities in school and I hope you can influence more of your
school mates and friends to participate in this taekwondo movement.”
Wong reminded the exponents that there was no shortcut to success and to excel, they had to train hard.
“You
cannot achieve glory in a matter of days. You have to do constant
training to improve your skills as taekwondo to improve yourselves both
physically and mentally.
Later, Wong also announced a grant of RM10,000 for STF to conduct its annual activities.
